• Training

  Riding Club offers lessons at 2 different yards close to town. Our BUCS team trains weekly at Drumcarrow Equestrian on a Wednesday afternoon, and we currently offer intermediate/advanced lessons there on a Monday and a Friday. Our beginners and intermediate riders tend to ride at Edenside Stables, although more advanced riders are welcome to ride there too if they would like. Lessons at Edenside run on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Both of these yards can be accessed easily by taxi, and Edenside can also be reached on the 99 Bus heading to Dundee. Riders are welcome to sign up for as many lessons as they would like and are paid for on a lesson-by-lesson basis, whilst team members are required to ride at least once a week. Lessons are usually in groups of up to 3 at Drumcarrow and up to 6 at Edenside, but private lessons can also be organised. Although we do not typically offer hacking, in the warmer months we try to organise groups hacks at a centre slightly further out of St Andrews.

  Our teams are coached by Angus Lohoar and Stephen Lohoar at Drumcarrow Equestrian. Angus and Stephen are competitive showjumpers and have trained and competed across Europe. They have successfully coached our BUCS teams for a number of years in both dressage and showjumping.

• Competition

  The Riding Squad is made up of 12 members, split into two teams. Each of the teams has 4 competitions throughout the year – 3 held at other Scottish universities and one home show (possibly more if the team successfully reaches regionals and nationals). 4 team members compete at a show. BUCS competitions do not require you to have your own horse, as the horses are provided by the venue of the hosting university at each competition. After a short warm-up period, riders are expected to be able to complete a simple dressage test (walk, trot and canter) and jump a course of show jumps around 80cm on an unknown horse. Team try-outs are held in September to select the teams for the upcoming year. If you would like more information on riding for the team, please get in touch.

  Whether you are new to the sport or an experienced rider, already attend the University or if you are thinking about attending, please get in touch to register your interest and find out more about our club.

  The University hosts a Sports Fayre at the beginning of each academic year during Orientation Week, giving prospective members the opportunity to talk to club members and sign up to ‘Give It A Go’ sessions.
